PURPOSE:To see distinctly a display image from a wide range by seeing the shadow of a liquid crystal on a reflective plate from the direction of the reflection angle when an electric field is applied to the liquid crystal and setting the thickness of a substrate arranged in the reflective plate side to <=0.4mm.. CONSTITUTION:When a voltage is applied across electrodes 4 and 5, liquid crystal molecules 3b in a corresponding part 3c are inclined to substrates 1 and 2. Light L which reaches a polarizing plate 9 through this part 3c does not reach a reflective plate 10 because the direction of polarization is not rotated, and a shadow C of liquid crystal materials 3 of the part 3c is formed on the reflective plate 10. When the reflective plate is seen from the side of a position A in the direction of the reflection angle, the shadow C projected to the reflective plate 10 is seen as a dark display image, and the part to which the electric field is not applied of liquid crystal materials 3 is seen as a bright white ground. When the reflective plate is seen from the side of a position B, the display image and the shadow C are seen double; but if the thickness of a substrate 2 is set to <=0.4mm., the display image is superposed on the shadow and is seen distinctly when the reflective plate 10 is seen from the side of the position B in the direction of the visual angle. |
