PURPOSE:The solid phase reaction between xanthane gum and an epoxide or halohydrin compound is effected to enable high-efficiency production of a novel type of xanthane gum which is suitable for use as a high-polymeric thickener, because it causes no reduction in viscosity at elevated temperatures and shows good antifungal properties. CONSTITUTION:The solid phase reaction between xanthane gum and an epoxide such as ethylene oxide, 1,2-epoxyethylbenzene or halohydrin such as ethylene chlorohydrin, 1-chloro-2-hydroxypropane is carried out to form a novel type of xanthane gum in which the recurring structural units are hydroxyalkylated at an OH-substitution degree of 0.01-0.30. The above reaction is conducted usually in a closed system in an inert atmosphere by adding 7-80pts.wt. of the epoxide or 7-85pts.wt. of the halohydrin to 100pts.wt. of the xanthane gum in the presence of a catalyst.
