PURPOSE:The complex of DL-phenylalanine with optically active mandelic acid is subjected to optical resolution in a specific solvent, then mandelic acid is removed from the product to enable high-yield production of the titled compound of high optical purity without the process for optical purification. CONSTITUTION:The optical resolution of the DL-phenylalanine-optically active mandelic acid complex is carried out in an aqueous medium containing an acidic substance with a pKa of 0.90-2.10 such as sulfuric acid, bisulfate salt or sulfamic acid, and an aldehyde such as salicyl aldehyde. The resultant optically active phenylalanine-optically active mandellic acid complex is treated with an ion-exchange resin or neutralized to remove the mandelic acid to give the objective compound. The reaction is effected by using the acidic compound in an amount of 0.2-1.6 times the molar amount of the phenylalanine and the aldehyde is 5-100mol%. USE:The L-isomer is used as an ingredient of aminoacid transfusion and a starting material of synthetic sweetener, while the D-isomer is used in medicines.
