PURPOSE:To obtain carbon fibers having improved coherency with little winding around rollers, by taking off melt spun filaments from raw material pitch with rollers and air suckers respectively in two stages while applying a binder thereto in a given step. CONSTITUTION:Molten raw material pitch is extruded through a spinneret 1 into filaments 2, which are collected with an air sucker 3 (step a). The resultant filaments 2 are then taken off with a roller 4 (step b), and taken off by the second roller 4' (step c). The filaments 2 are then taken off with the second stage air sucker 3' (step d), contained in a can 7 or directly heat infusibilized (step e) and then carbonized (fired) in an inert gas atmosphere (step f). A binder is applied to the filaments 2 or pitch fibers in any step of the steps (a)-(e).
