PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as an antifungal agent for men and animals or an agricultural fungicide industrially in high yield, by reacting a specific compound with a halo-substituted benzyl halide in a specific solvent in the presence of an alkali metal hydroxide. CONSTITUTION:A compound such as 2-[1-(1H-imidazole-1-yl)vinyl]phenol, etc. shown by the formula I (x and Y are H, or halogen) is reacted with a mono- or di-halo-substituted benzyl halide such as 2,4-dichlorobenzyl chloride, etc. in dimethyl sulfoxide or in a mixed solvent of dimethyl sulfoxide and another solvent in the presence of an alkali metal hydroxide such as KOH, etc. at a temperature (0 deg.C) under cooling - 100 deg.C, preferably at 10-30 deg.C, for several minutes - several hours, to give a vinylimidazole derivative shown by the formula II (R<1> is halogen; R<2> is H, or R<1>) in a yield as high as >=90%.
