A method of controlling vehicle speed and a system thereof are provided to allow a driver to avoid traffic hazards and police enforcements by extracting speed limit at the current location by receiving map information and traffic hazard information in real time through a navigation unit, and controlling an accelerator according to the comparison between the current speed and the extracted speed. A method of controlling vehicle speed comprises: receiving map information through a vehicle navigation unit; extracting the speed limit at the current location of the vehicle from the map information; receiving traffic information through the navigation unit; and changing the extracted speed limit depending on the traffic information. The traffic information includes traffic conditions and hazards at the current location of the vehicle. The vehicle speed control step includes controlling an accelerator if the current speed of the vehicle is higher than the extracted speed limit, and releasing the control if the current vehicle speed is lower than the extracted speed limit. A system(100) of controlling vehicle speed comprises a vehicle speed extracting unit(10) for outputting the speed limit at the current location of the vehicle, a vehicle speed control unit(20) generating control signals to control the vehicle speed based on the extracted speed limit and the current vehicle speed, and an accelerator control unit(30) controlling the accelerator based on the control signals.
