PURPOSE:To obtain the titled fibers having fiber cross-sectional structure without radial orientation, by melt spinning spinning pitch through a spinning nozzle having an enlarged diameter in the intermediate part of nozzle holes, and infusibilizing and carbonizing the resultant fibers. CONSTITUTION:A carbonaceous raw material, e.g. coal tar (pitch), is heat-treated in an inert gas atmosphere to give a mesophase pitch, which is then melt spun through a spinning nozzle having an enlarged diameter in the intermediate part of the nozzle holes to afford pitch fibers. The resultant fibers are then infusibilized, carbonized, and if necessary graphitized to give the aimed carbon fibers.
