PURPOSE:To obtain an acylphenol compound useful as agricultural chemicals, photographic chemicals, UV-absorbers, etc., with simple operation, in high yield and selectivity, by reacting a carboxylic acid aromatic ester in the presence of an ion-exchanging lamellar clay catalyst. CONSTITUTION:A carboxylic acid aromatic ester such as phenyl benzoate, alpha- naphthyl benzoate, etc. is made to react in the presence of the ion-exchanging lamellar clay catalyst such as synthetic mica, montmorillonite, vermiculite, etc., preferably in lquid phase at 100-350 deg.C, preferably at 150-250 deg.C for 0.1-10hr under reduced pressure, atmospheric pressure or positive pressure to obtain an acylphenol such as hydroxybenzophenone, phenyl alpha-naphthoate, etc. EFFECT:The objective compound can be produced without using a large amount of catalyst, and using a simplified separation and purification process prior to the hydrolysis of the reaction product.
