This electric rotary machine, functioning as a motor or as a generator, has its associated stator poles 2a, 2b disposed not directly opposite each other but offset with respect to each other in the direction of the axis of rotation 7 of the rotor 3, these two poles being located on diametrically opposite generatrices. The conductors 9 of the rotor 3 are disposed in such a way as also to define poles 10a, 10b which are axially offset and located on diametrically opposite generatrices, in such a way that they can be directly opposite the stator poles 2a, 2b, respectively.
