PURPOSE:To discriminate a previous picture recording mode, by outputting a corresponding pulse width signal only when the outputting period of the dropout signal of reproduced video signals is longer than a prescribed cycle and finding the existence/nonexistence or length of a signal representing the reproducing mode and the pulse width signal. CONSTITUTION:Reproduced video signals are given to an input terminal 20 and the output signal of a dropout detecting circuit 10 is reversely outputted to an output terminal 21 and, at the same time, supplied to a pulse width detecting circuit 11. The circuit 11 inputs a corresponding pulse width signal in a mode discriminating circuit 12 only when the outputting prescribed cycle. Moreover, a mode signal representing the current reproducing mode is given to the circuit 12 from an input terminal 22 and a clock signal is inputted in the circuit 12 from a clock generator 13 through an input terminal 23. The circuit 12 discriminates the previous picture recording mode by finding the current reproducing mode and presence/absence and length of the pulse width signal and outputs a discriminate signal to an output terminal 24. Therefore, the previous picture recording modes can be discriminated at the time of reproduction.
