PURPOSE:To improve the data compression and to realize high speed processing by resetting a K parameter count value by 1K so as to apply one-dimensional data compression when the transfer between a data line mixed with black/white lines and a uniform level data line is detected. CONSTITUTION:A picture data comes from a scanner 7 through an input interface 6 or from other system through a communication interface 10. The data is expanded on a bit map memory 4 and displayed on a CRT11. The data edited based on the content of display is stored in a storage memory 2 and then the data is compressed via a compression and reproducing device 5. In this case, when a data is transmitted from the line of white/black mixed line to the line of uniform level (full white or full black) in the K-th line, or transmitted from the line of uniform level to the white/black mixed line in the K-th line, one- dimensional coding is executed in place of the two-dimensional coding so as to improve the data compression rate.
