An endless belt assembly for use in belt type delivery apparatus comprises a belt (102) having one end portion (104) and the other end portion (106). A mounting assembly (110) is fixed to the one end portion (104). A roller (130, having a circumferential surface high in coefficient of friction is rotatably supported by the mounting assembly and cooperates with a mating member (140) fixedly mounted on the mounting assembly to define therebetween a gap (142) substantially parallel to a rotary axis of the roller. A drive device (150) is operative to rotate the roller, in frictional engagement with a surface of the other end portion of the belt received in the gap, for forcibly moving the said other end portion through the gap while pressing the other end portion against the mating member until the tension applied to the belt reaches a desired value. A locking device (168) locks the roller against rotation to maintain the other end portion clamped between the roller and the mating member, to thereby connect the one end portion and the other end portion of the belt to each other to form the belt into an endless loop. A connecting belt separate form the belt may be provided, having one end portion connectable to the other end portion of the belt and the other end portion inserted into the gap and clamped between the roller and the mating member. <IMAGE> |
