PURPOSE:To reduce the number of times of retransmission and to reduce the transmission time by retransmitting picture information when it is detected that the received picture information has an error, and retransmitting the information with a transmission speed lowered by one level after the information is retransmitted for a prescribed number of times. CONSTITUTION:An original to be transmitted is read by a read control section 4 and stored temporarily in a picture memory 5. The stored picture information is read from the said picture memory 5 by a transmission control section 6 and transmitted to the reception side via a MODEM7, an NCU8 and a line 9. The information relating to the result is returned to a retransmission signal control section 1 via the line 9 and the NCU8. When it is judged that the picture information is to be retransmitted, it is informed to the transmission control section 6 to retransmit the picture information. When it is judged that there exists still some errors even with the retransmission for a prescribed number of times, the communication speed is lowered by one level and the information is retransmitted.
