PURPOSE:To economize fuel and increase the MTBF of a steering machine, by automatically setting an optimal steering angle adjustment coefficient and a check held adjustment coefficient for an automatic steering gear in terms of drift angle frequency data and steering angle frequency data during the navigation of a ship to perform the optimal automatic steering thereof. CONSTITUTION:The drift angle thetao-thetai5 between the azimuth thetai4 of navigation of a ship and that thetao2 of a set course and a steering angle delta21 which is detected through a rudder angle indicator 20 are changed from synchronous quantities to digital ones by an S/D converter 22. The digital quantities are applied to a steering angle and drift angle frequency examination unit 23. charts indicating the relations of drift angle frequency and steering angle frequency to rudder angle adjustment coefficient and check helm adjustment coefficient are stored in a calculation circuit 39 beforehand to determine such a rudder angle adjustment coefficient 41 and a check helm adjustment coefficient 42 as to minimize the frequency of large drift angle and steering angle. The coefficients 41 and 42 are automatically applied to a rudder angle adjustment circuit 12 and a check helm adjustment circuit 15 and set therein.
