PURPOSE:To permit comfortable air conditioning, short in the time of unnecessary high capacity operation and small in room temperature fluctuation, by a method wherein the capacity of variable capacity compressor is controlled so as to follow an air-conditioning load determined by a difference between the room temperature and a set temperature as well as the size of a space to be air-conditioned. CONSTITUTION:In a control unit 15, an operating means 16 obtains the temperature difference from the outputs of a room temperature setting circuit 11 and a room temperature sensor 12 while a zone deciding means 18 decides a belonging zone in accordance with the temperature difference. A zone pattern selecting means 17 selects the optimum zone pattern from three kinds of zone patterns memorized previously based on the condition of switch of a load selecting switch 13. An output means 19 outputs a capacity control signal corresponding to the belonging zone decided by the zone deciding means 18 in the zone pattern selected by the zone pattern deciding means 18. Then, an inverter device 8 outputs an A.C. output having a frequency commanded by the capacity control signal outputted by the output means 19 to drive the motor 9 of the variable capacity compressor 1.
