The invention relates to a seating device, in particular a chair, with a rigid seat part having a backrest and a seat surface and with a rigid underframe which is connected to said seat part. In order to allow a safe rocking movement towards the front and back of the chair, ruling out tipping over, the seat part is mounted on the underframe - seen in vertical plan through the centre of gravity of the seating device - so as to be tiltable on a pivot located towards the bottom of the continuation of the backrest. The pivot is moved above the basic plane of the underframe towards the centre of gravity of the seating device. Provided on the underframe and in the front region of the rocking chair is at least one rest stop which limits the rocking movement of the seat part and can be engaged with two corresponding rest surfaces formed on the seat part.
