A process is presented for producing a cable harness provided with a watertight sheathing with respect to its main body and its primary and secondary branches. In order for production of the watertight sheathing to be mechanised and automated to a great extent, it is proposed to produce the said sheathing by knitting around the elements of the cable harness a continuous, mechanically strong carrier material, in particular a thread of natural and/or synthetic fibres and a coating of a heat-meltable adhesive material, the melting point of which is lower than that of the plastic insulation of the conductor wires of the cable harness and that, to produce the watertightness of the sheathing of the cable harness, the knitted covering is subsequently heated by radiation heat, at least on its outer surface, until the melting point of the heat-meltable adhesive material is reached, the use of a metal filament as the mechanically strong carrier material on the one hand allowing a shielding of the cable harness to be formed and on the other hand at the same time allowing the said metal filament to be used as a heating resistor for heating up the heat-meltable adhesive. For testing the watertightness of the sheathing of the cable harness, a valve which allows compressed air or the like to be introduced can finally be inserted in the said sheathing. <IMAGE>
