In a process for the production of metal slip rings used in rotating mechanical seals and bounding a wedge-shaped gap open towards the axis as a lubricant passage, in which the slip ring is smoothed on its surface of contact with the adjacent slip ring, the said surface being assigned to the gap, it is provided according to the invention that the slip ring is produced from stress-free-annealed steel and, after being shaped, smoothed on its surface of contact with the other slip ring by chromium-plating.
