The present invention concerns a method for detection and recording of faults in hot metallurgical semifinished products. In it, the flame of an oxygen cutting torch is directed against the surface being investigated at a particular angle, whose point of attack shifts along the surface, the point of attack is registered by a video camera and sent to a separately situated monitor screen, the observer while viewing the monitor screen plots a map of the investigated surface and records on it both the dimensions and the type of fault discovered. It can be used for handling of steel castings, rods and blooms in the hot state, when one wishes to perform the casting, fault correction, and rolling steps continuously. <IMAGE>
