PURPOSE:To obtain silicon hydride in a high yield by reacting a specified silicon compound with an alkali or alkaline earth metallic alcoholate. CONSTITUTION:To a silicon compound having one or more Si-H or Si-Si bonds in the molecule is added an alcoholate dispersed in or supported on an inert solid such as activated carbon by 0.00001-10mol per 1mol Si in the silicon compound. The silicon compound is represented by formula I (where x>=1, y<=2x+2, z<=2x, ynot equal to 0 or znot equal to 0, and when x=1, znot equal to 0), and the alcoholate is represented by formula II [where M is an alkali or alkaline earth metal, each of R1 and R2 is alkyl or aryl (deriv. group), m=1-2, and n=0-1]. Water or an alcohol represented by formula III (where R3 is R1) may be further added. They are brought into a reaction at 0-100 deg.C under ordinary or elevated pressure to obtain silicon hydride represented by formula IV (where l=1-x).
