A downdraught thermal reactor (10) comprises a chamber (14) for receiving biomass, e.g. via an upper conveyor (19), and includes a 16 primary combustion zone (11), preferably of inverted bell shape, and air inlets (29) for feeding combustion air into the reactor (10). The primary zone (11) is separated by a grate (13) from a secondary combustion zone (12) where further higher- intensity combustion takes place. The gas product is discharged from the secondary zone (12) by way of a gas diffuser (25) and is then directed via gas channel (49) between internal and external cooling jackets (36,59) to a gas off-take (58), where heat exchange between the gas product and the combustion air can occur.

|
