PURPOSE:To make the use of hydrogen unnecessary and to obtain safely a nitride layer having a smooth surface by using powder of ammonium halide or metallic halide as a component of a treating agent to be put in a fluidized bed furnace together with a material to be treated. CONSTITUTION:A treating agent is prepd. by mixing powder of a refractory such as alumina with nitride forming powder of a nitride-forming metallic element or an alloy thereof and powder of ammonium halide and/or metallic halide which sublimes or evaporates at the treating temp. or below. The treating agent and a material to be treated are put in a fluidized bed furnace, and gas contg. nitrogen is introduced into the furnace to fluidize the treating agent. The furnace is then heated to form a nitride or carbonitride layer on the surface of the material to be treated.
