Novel benzoquinone derivatives and their use as color-developers in recording material, process for their production and the production of corresponding hydroquinones.

Disclosed herein is a novel benzoquinone derivative represented by the following general formula (I):
<Chemistry id="chema01" num="0001"><Image id="ia01" he="23" wi="61" file="IMGA0001.TIF" imgContent="chem" imgFormat="TIFF" inline="no" /></Chemistry>wherein R, means an alkyl or cycloalkyl group, R<Sub>2</Sub> denotes an alkyl or cycloalkyl group, a phenyl group which may optionally contain one or more halogen atoms and/or alkyl, cycloalkyl, alkoxy, alkylne, phenoxy, phenyl and/or biphenylyl groups, or a benzyl or naphthyl group which may optionally contain one or more methyl groups. This compound is useful as an oxidative color-developing agent for recording materials. The compound can be prepared by oxidation of the corresponding hydroquinone.
