PURPOSE:To obtain a high-MW vinyl polymer without undergoing any side reactions, by polymerizing a vinyl monomer in the presence of a catalyst system comprising a specified initiator and a cocatalyst and being stable at normal temperature and atmospheric pressure. CONSTITUTION:1mol of a vinyl monomer is polymerized in the presence of a catalyst system comprising 1mol or below of at least one initiator selected from (a) a compound of formula I [wherein M is Si, Ge, or Sn, R1-3 are each a 1- 20C alkyl or a 6-10C aryl, R4-5 are each H, R1, or formula II (wherein X is O or -SO3-, Y is a 1-20C alkyl which may have an acidic H-free functional group, or a 6-10C aryl), R6 is H, Y or vinyl, R7-8 are each H, a halogen, a 1-20C alkyl, or the like], a compound of formula III (wherein R11-12 are H or Y, l is 1-4, m is 0-1, Z is H, a monovalent - hexavalent aliphatic, alicyclic or aromatic hydrocarbon, or the like, and n is an integer equal to the valence of Z), and a compound of formula IV (wherein p and q are each 0-1, and r is 0-5) and (b) 1/500-1mol, per mol of component (a), of an ionic source of (bi)fluoride ions, etc.
