Disclosed is a liquid crystal display wherein variations in cell thickness are suppressed by surely arranging a spherical spacer at a predetermined position between substrates. Specifically disclosed is a liquid crystal display (50a) comprising an active matrix substrate (20a) having a plurality of gate lines (1a) extending parallel to each other, a counter substrate (30a) arranged opposite to the active matrix substrate (20a), a liquid crystal layer (25) arranged between the active matrix substrate (20a) and the counter substrate (30a), and a spherical spacer (21) so arranged between the active matrix substrate (20a) and the counter substrate (30a) as to overlap each gate line (1a) for defining the thickness of the liquid crystal layer (25). A first projection wall (9a) for surrounding the spacer (21) is provided on each gate line (1a) of the active matrix substrate (20a), while a second projection wall (19b) for surrounding the spacer (21) is provided on the counter substrate (30a). This invention enables to realize high display quality in a liquid crystal display wherein a spherical spacer is arranged by an inkjet process, and thus it is useful for large-sized liquid crystal television sets.
