To replace a worn or defective length of rail, in a railway permanent way, the wagon (3) with replacement rails in a repair train rake (1) is positioned with its wheels flanking the defective length (A). The defective length is cut free and lifted by a crane (7). The replacement rail length is neutralized by heat and lowered into place by the crane, and its ends are bonded to the rail line.
