PURPOSE:To eliminate the distortion of a picture by giving a variable power function to an optical system and changing the effective area of the output of a line image sensor in accordance with the rate of variable power. CONSTITUTION:An overall width RL in the main scanning direction of a contact glass 1 is focused on the overall width of a light receiving surface 9a of a line image sensor 9 by a lens 8 placed in a position A1, and a part corresponding to the reduction of the light receiving surface 9a of the line image sensor 9 is focused on the lens 8 placed in a position A2. Consequently, an optical path L1 for unmagnification is placed on the first light receiving cell S1 in the main scanning direction on the light receiving surface 9a of the line image sensor 9, and an optical path L2 for reduction is placed on the K-th light receiving cell Sk in the main scanning direction. Thus, the distortion of a picture is prevented when the magnification is varied.
