PURPOSE:To eliminate defects of upward tracing system for profile controller by performing transient up/down motion of stylus at the start of profiling and clamping under slow lowering properly. CONSTITUTION:In a controller for performing profile control on the basis of a signal from tracer head TR for tracing on the surface of model MDL, up/down motion memory means (register) REG and means for mechanically detecting the positions of upper and lower shafts are provided to upward tracing system for clamping only downward feeding thus to prevent lowering of cutter CT in the recess of model. Furthermore, initializing means for setting predetermined level (alpha) into the register REG at the start of profiling, means for adding the variation of mechanical position detecting means for every predetermined period into the register REG, update means for setting (alpha) into the register upon reaching of the content of register to predetermined level (beta) and means for performing clamp feeding upon dropping of the content of register below (gamma) are provided while satisfying the relation gamma<alpha<beta.
