PURPOSE:An antitumor agent that contains, as an active ingredient, cosmomycin C, an anthracyclin. CONSTITUTION:The objective antitumor agent contains an anthracyclin of the formula as an active ingredient. The compound of the formula has powerful growth-inhibitory action against mouse fibroblasts M-MSV Ba1b3T3 which is transformed with the Moloney strain of murine sarcoma virus. Further, it shows strong antibiotic activity against Sarcina rutes and Bacillus subtilis and can be used as an antibiotic. The compound is obtained by cultivation of a microorganism in Streptomyces such as Streptomyces cosmosus (FERM P-7074) at a pH of 4.0-9.0, temperature of 15-40 deg.C under aerobic conditions.
