NEW MATERIAL:The squarium compound of formula I (X1 is H, F or Br; X2- X5 are H, F or Cl). USE:A charge generation substance of the photosensitive material for electrophotography. Applicable to a semiconductor laser printer, and usable widely as an intelligent copier. It can be applied also as an optical recording medium such as laser disc and an organic solar cell, etc. PREPARATION:The compound of formula I can be prepared by reacting 3,4-dihydroxy-3-cyclobutene-1,2-dione of formula II with the aniline derivative of formula III, e.g. in n-butyl alcohol or amyl alcohol at 120-140 deg.C. The compound of formula I has flat spectrometric sensitivity over a wavelength range of 400- 850nm, and exhibits sufficiently high photosensitivity in whole visible range and near-infrared range.
