PURPOSE:To enable to accurately move an ink ribbon and to print at high speed, by a construction wherein the spacing between a printing head and a platen can be varied, and the spacing is adjusted in accordance with the kind of an ink ribbon. CONSTITUTION:In a wire dot printer, the spacing between the printing head and the platen is made to be adjustable. When printing in colors by using an ink ribbon in which colors are separately provided in the width direction of the ribbon, the spacing is set to be wide, thereby enabling accurate movement of the ink ribbon, at the sacrifice of printing speed. When printing in colors by using an ink ribbon in which colors are separately provided in the longitudinal direction of the ribbon or when printing by using a monochromatic ribbon, it is unnecessary to move the ribbon in the width direction thereof, and the spacing is set to be narrow to enable high-speed printing. |
