PURPOSE:To reduce the smear quantity without increasing the number of stages of CCDs neither the number of CCDs in the vertical direction by providing a horizontal-direction wiring, which can drive every line of switching gates independently, and a vertical-direction shift register which applies pulse voltages to this wiring in a prescribed order. CONSTITUTION:A device has a coupling part consisting of a terminal 209 which removes a smear electric charge to the external, a terminal 208 which applies a pulse phiN to a row of switch MOSTs which controls the timing of this removal, and a terminal 201 which applies a pulse phiT to the gate of a stage where the smear electric charge is stored temporarily. Horizontal-direction lines which control switch MOSTs 206, a vertical shift register 100 which determines the row of switch MOSTs to be turned on, and a terminal 212 which applies a control pulse phiVT of switch MOSTs 206 are provided additionally. Since the transfer speed of CCD in the vertical direction is improved by this device, the smear quantity is reduced, and the dynamic range of CCD in the vertical direction is extended about twice.
