An apparatus and a method for measuring the surface of oil in a hermetic compressor are provided to prevent breakage and performance deterioration of a compressor by controlling an operation of the compressor according to the amount of oil measured in real-time. An apparatus for measuring the surface of oil in a hermetic compressor comprises a casing(10) and an oil amount detector(40). The casing has a driving unit(20) and a compression unit(30) in a sealed space thereof, and allows oil to be filled in the driving unit and the compression unit. The oil amount detector is installed in the casing to measure the remaining amount of the oil according to temperature variation. The oil amount detector includes reference value temperature sensors for detecting internal temperature of the casing, an average temperature sensor, and a controller(45).
