PURPOSE:To obtain glutathione suitable as a drug for the promotion of the hepatic function and the detoxication of the liver, in high yield, by culturing a strain belonging to Saccharomyces genus and resistant to amides and indophenols. CONSTITUTION:A microbial strain belonging to Saccharomyces genus, resistant to amides (preferably N,N-diallyl-2,2-dichloroacetamide) or indophenols (preferably 2,6-dichlorophenol indophenol) and capable of producing glutathione [e.g. Saccharomyces cerevisiae (FERM P-7614), etc.] is cultured, and the objective glutathione is separated from the cultured product.
