PURPOSE:To prepare the titled active compound useful as a herbicide and a strong inhibitor of glutamine synthetase, without necessitating the DL resolution, by a fermentation process, by culturing a microbial strain belonging to Kitasatosporia genus aerobically in a medium. CONSTITUTION:A microbial strain belonging to Kitasatosporia genus and capable of producing phosphinothricin [e.g. Actinomycetes KA-338 strain (FERM-BP- 358)] is cultured aerobically in a medium at 20-40 deg.C and 6-9pH for 3-7 days preferably by a deep-tank cultivation process.
