PURPOSE:To output symbols or characters indicating that no picture information is recorded on a recording carrier as picture outputs, by installing a picture information detecting section and character information generating section to the recording carrier. CONSTITUTION:The reproducing device of this invention is composed of a recording carrier 1, pickup 2 for obtaining signals from the recording carrier 1, signal processing section 3, picture signal detecting section 4, picture information generating section 5 which generates symbols or characters indicating that no picture signal is recorded as picture information, and switch 6. The picture signal detecting section 4 detects whether or not a picture signal is contained in signals restored by the signal processing section 3. When the picture signal is contained, the switch 6 is set so that the picture signal can be outputted as it is. When no picture signal is contained, the switch 6 is set so as to output signals outputted from the picture information generating section 5. |
