PURPOSE:To obtain molded catalyst having high mechanical strength in spite of used small amt. of molding additive, contg. many pores and having high activity by molding a compsn. for the materials of the catalyst prepd. by mixing an inorg. compd. with a water absorbing resin as molding additive. CONSTITUTION:A catalyst is prepd. by molding a compsn. of the catalyst materials obtd. by mixing an inorg. compd. with a water absorbing resin having at least 150 times by weight of the weight of the resin of water absorbing capacity as a molding additive. Suitable water absoring resins are hydrolyzed starch/ acrylonitrile graft copolymer, saponified acrylic ester/vinyl acetate copolymer, crosslinked modified polyvinyl alcohol, etc. Suitable amt. of the water absorbing resin to be added is 0.1-10, pref. 0.2-5wt% basing on the amt. of diatomaceous earth contained as a catalyst material. Further, water-soluble resin, such as polyacrylic acid or polymaleic acid having >=1,000,000mol.wt. may be pref. used in combination.
