In the segregation process for purifying metals, esp. aluminium, the heat flux is continuously adjusted so that the layer of coarse crystals attains a consistent thickness over the entire section. The layer is progressively remelted from the bottom of the purification vessel(3). The speed of upward travel of the melt front is controlled, so as to be equiv. to the rate of layer growth at the top of the layer, so that a solid layer of const. thickness is maintained between the remelted metal and the liquid metal to be purified. This process is useful for removing Zn, Pb, Mg and Si from AA1000, 1100 and 1200 alloys which have been pre-purified.
|
