PURPOSE:To execute continuous filtration or continuous clarifying filtration of a large amt. of water for a long time by executing a three-dimensional filtration using a layer of small density material powder. CONSTITUTION:Feed water introduced from a feed water introducing pipe 28 into a feed water chamber 2 is filtered three-dimensionally by a layer 4 of small density material powder and enters a filtered water chamber 6 and is discharged through a filtered water discharging pipe 10. When the filtration velocity decreases, the water contg. the small density material in a sucking circulation pipe 12 for the small density material powder connected with each chamber 4 for packing the small density material powder is sucked by driving a pump 11 and discharged to the bottom of a closed water tank through a stirrer 14 and a discharging circulation pipe 13 for the small density material powder. Impurities having larger density than water settle to the bottom of the closed water tank 1, and the settled matter is discharged from time to time to the outside of the tank through a withdrawal pipe. Further, the powdery small density material contg. no impurity rises up to the space formed by discharging the powdery small density material contg. impurities in the above described packed chamber 4 by the suction of the pump, thus, the space is filled with the powdery small density material, and normal filtration operation is achieved.
