PURPOSE:To retrieve pictures easily by displaying plural picture data in a picture file which are specified by the retrieval input of code data and outputting indicated picture data out of these displayed picture data to print it. CONSTITUTION:Retrieval code data is inputted to refer to a table in a RAM34, and the storage position and the attribute of a pertinent picture are discriminated. A storage medium is judged to be an optical disc 4 or a film 5 in accordance with position information, and the address of the picture is obtained and is sent to a control part of a file 4 in case of the disc 4, and the first picture data is sent from the file 4 to the RAM34. This picture is displayed on a CRT8 and is discriminated by an operator. When the operator inputs a print command, picture data in the RAM34 is sent to a printer 3. Thereafter, if another pertinent picture is found, said operation is repeated after printing. If the first display picture among retrieved pictures is not a desired picture, a picture clear command is inputted to clear the display picture, and this picture is not printed, and the second picture is led out from the file 4.
