The invention relates to well-drilling with control unit at the top. The apparatus of the invention comprises a drilling assembly controlled from the top comprising a rod 57 driven by a motor and intended to be fixed to the upper end of a drill-pipe string 13 and to drive it during a drilling operation, a torque wrench 69 supported by the assembly and capable of moving in order to break a connection by screwing between the drill-pipe string 13 and the rod 57, as well as an elevator 118 supported by the assembly and engaging on a section of drill pipe 13 below the torque wrench 69. Torque-stopping means 133 extending towards the bottom of the control assembly at the top are received, in a sliding manner, in passages 136 provided in a support part 119 from which the elevator 118 is suspended. The invention is used to solve balancing problems and to safeguard personnel during the drilling of wells. <IMAGE>
