The device for the stepwise setting of the speed of a work shaft (6), in particular that of wood-working machines, has a drive motor (1) which can be switched on and off and a work shaft (6) situated at a distance from the motor shaft (2) and driven by a V-belt drive. The V-belt drive is formed by a continuously variable V-belt mechanism (3, 4, 5) or P.I.V. variable speed mechanism. A setter (11, 12, 13; 22) is assigned to this mechanism. There are a plurality of presetters (21) for predetermined speed values of the work shaft (6), the said presetters determining the respective position into which the setter of the mechanism can be adjusted by hand (22) or in a driven manner (13). <IMAGE>
