The invention relates to a sliding-vane rotary vacuum pump. Its purpose is to lower the effort in terms of time and material, relative to the suction capacity, and to reduce friction losses. The object of the invention is to develop a sliding-vane rotary vacuum pump whose working volume is considerably larger than a fifth of the casing volume and whose rotor has low frictional resistance. To this end the following is provided according to the invention: The diameter of the rotor is at most 60% of the diameter of the casing interior but is preferably smaller than the radius thereof. The rotor has only one vane, which slides over the whole length of the slot and is composed of two halves which slide on each other and which are pushed apart radially by compression springs. The radial length of the vane halves is less than or at most equal to the smallest of the chord lengths formed by them, but greater than the difference between the diameter of the casing interior and the diameter of the rotor. o
