PURPOSE:To obtain the titled resin by performing the reaction stably and uniformly to the desired extent of reaction, by reacting a phenol in an aliphatic alcohol while conducting temperature rise and addition of a drying oil in two steps, and reacting the reaction product with a formaldehyde. CONSTITUTION:A phenol and a drying oil are reacted togethr at a temperature <=80 deg.C in an aliphatic alcohol in the presence of an acid catalyst and, after a drying oil is further added to the reaction mixture, the whole is reacted at a higher temperature. The reaction product is reacted with a formaldehyde in the presence of a basic catalyst. Examples of the drying oils used included tung oil, dehydrated castor oil, and linseed oil. Examples of the acidic catalysts include hydrochloric, toluenesulfonic and Lewis acids. It is preferable that the acidic catalyst is added after it has been dissolved in said aliphatic alcohol. Examples of the phenols include cresol, resorcinol and bisphenol A. Examples of the basic catalysts include ammonia, ethylenediamine and metal hydroxides.
