The contents of a cardboard container (11) are fed in an evacuation station (10) onto a conveyor (12) in which the cardboard container (11) is lifted. The cardboard container (11) is then lowered over a base (25) which has folding elements (23, 24) with projecting guide elements (31a to 31d), and then dropped from a certain height, in which process the mandrel (26) opens the lid flaps (13), so that all the flaps (13, 14) are extended. Then the folding members (23, 24) are rotated, in which process the cardboard container (11) is laid flat. The base (25) is tilted about the horizontal axis (28).
