Loading station for automatically loading a plurality of transport units at a time to and from the long sides of standardised transport receptacles, after the transport units have been fed by all the conventional conveying systems or by forklift trucks onto an automatically laterally travelling transfer platform, and have subsequently been picked up by a driverless loading vehicle during an interruption in material flow, for use by large despatchers (also goods distribution centres) and small or medium-sized enterprises. The transport units are deposited one behind the other on the transfer platform. The latter is, so to speak, the "mother vehicle" on and by means of which the loading vehicle, as the "daughter vehicle", is moved parallel to the longitudinal sides of the transport receptacles into the correct position for loading, accepts the transport units there and moves them into and deposits them in the transport receptacle perpendicularly to the direction of travel of the displacement platform, and vice versa. The drive carriage of the loading vehicle does not enter the transport receptacle. The travelling elements of the displacement platform have been provided in such a way that passageways, which hinder transverse traffic, can be dispensed with on the ramp.
