The brake pressure control valve (2), which is an integral part of a vehicle brake system, is connected to a pressure supply (5) and has a housing (18), a control slide valve (19) which is displaceable by way of a pedal and a control sleeve (20). The control slide valve (19) is displaceable inside the control sleeve (20). The control sleeve (20) is designed in the nature of a stepped piston and is arranged so that it can slide inside stepped cylinders (32, 33, 34) located in the housing (18) and is shifted into a starting position by actuation in the range of one step with pressure from the pressure supply (5). A closed end (20b) of the control sleeve (20) is also acted upon by pressure from the pressure supply (5) by way of an electrically controllable control valve (41). Acting upon the end (20b) pushes the control sleeve (20) out of the starting position relative to the control slide valve (19), so that a brake pressure is introduced into the vehicle brake system. The brake pressure control valve (2) can easily be built into a vehicle and allows brake pressure to be provided as needed without operating the pedal (64), for example for testing brake circuits for leaks and for overcoming wheel slip.
