In the spooling device the spool is driven with constant circumferential velocity by a drive roller or an axial drive. The spooling device which has a non-conveying traversing apparatus, in particular wing traverse, also has a contact roller which lies against the spool and around which the thread is partly looped. This contact roller has the function of a print roll and improves the thread deposition. The contact roller is driven independently of the spool, preferably by its own motor, with a power which corresponds at least to the idling power of the contact roller at the given circumferential velocity of the spool.
