In order to simplify the thyristor circuits of the excitation device of a synchronous machine, the number of turns of the excitation winding is doubled in that each coil (2, 3) has two sections (4, 5 and 6, 7 respectively) which are located one inside the other in the form of a spiral, the one section (5 or 7 respectively) forming cooling ribs because of greater height and the heat extraction being improved. The production of a coil (2, 3) is simple since the flat conductors (8, 9) which run with their jacket surface parallel to the walls of the poles (1) are wound jointly with the insulation (10) of the turns towards the coil (2, 3). Each pole carries two coils (2, 3) having a different winding sense. This results in short and easily producible switching connectors (12). The strength of the coil composite is high, and the winding space is utilised to a high extent as a result of the matched numbers of turns. <IMAGE>
