PURPOSE:To obtain a vinyl ester resin by safely conducting an esterification reaction by preventing gelation, by reacting a polymerizable unsaturated monobasic acid with an alpha-glycol resin having alpha-glycol terminal groups. CONSTITUTION:A polymerizable unsaturated monobasic acid is reacted with an alpha-glycol resin of formula I, wherein X1, X2, and Xn are each H, a 1-3C alkyl, or a halogen atom, T1, T2, and Tn are each a side-chain terminal groups and is H or a group of formula II, III, or IV (wherein R is H or methyl, one of Y1 and Y2 is OH and the other is Cl or Br), n is an average degree of polymerization, n>=0, at least 40% of the total of the side-chain terminal groups (the total of T1+T2+Tn) are alpha-glycol groups of formula V. The ratio of the alpha-glycol resin used to the polymerizable unsaturated monobasic acid used is preferably such that 0.2-2.2 equivalent of the latter is present per equivalent of the alpha-glycol groups of the alpha-glycol resin.
